Did you know there was a time when you couldn’t go to an amazing San Diego mattress sale store? Have you ever imagined a world without the impeccable Mickey or the sweet and all-knowing Diane? It’s hard to believe, but countless generations of people had to create their own beds without their guidance. So what exactly is the history of mattresses and how did they come to be? There is, in fact, much more history behind them than you may initially think. Find out all about it by reading about it below!
Humble Beginnings
Many, many years before we had heavenly San Diego mattresses, there was the oldest known mattress, which was around 77,000 years old! It was made from grass found in South Africa in the Sibudu Cave site in KwaZulu-Natal. The word mattress comes from the Arabic word مَطْرَحٌ (maṭraḥ), which can translate to “something thrown down” or “place where something is thrown down.” This would influence the word for mattress in multiple European languages, for example, in French it is matelas, the Germans call it matratze, and the Italian word is materasso. The ancient Romans had several different kinds of mattresses designated for different purposes, including a “reading and study” bed and one designated for the old or the ill to pass away on. King Louis XIV (1638-1715) from France was known to love beds so much that he had 413 of them! He even had court sessions in his own bedroom.
Into the Modern Day Mattress
In 1871, the mattress as we know it today was invented by Heinrich Westphal. Just two years later, Neil Arnott invented the waterbed. At the time, it was commonly used in hospitals. Then, in the early 1900s, the Murphy bed, also known as the wall bed, was invented by William Lawrence Murphy in San Francisco. This was revolutionary because they helped save a lot of space for people living in places such as one-bedroom apartments in the cities. They do not usually come with box springs. You can see them featured in many movies and cartoons from the century. There was even a song called The Murphy Bed written in 1958. During the 2000s, memory foam mattresses soared in popularity and we still enjoy them now in the early 2020s.
